DREAMS OF PERFECTION ABOUT TO BE SHATTERED

May 8th is Mother’s Day, a day we celebrate motherhood and recognize and appreciate our mothers’ roles in our lives.

I think many of us can agree that Mother’s Day is a loaded holiday: for some, it’s a joyous occasion; for others, it’s just another sad reminder of loss and regrets.

It’s a bit of both for me. I cherish the love my children shower on me on this occasion…and I’m also saddened by what an imperfect mother I have been. Holding both of these emotions in my heart is the truest way for me to embrace this holiday. And appreciating my own mother and myself-as-mom with gratitude and with a good dose of forgiveness is the truest way for me to grow into my best self.

In my May 2nd YouTube episode, My Not So Perfect Family, I share an illusion about my ‘perfect family’ that I desperately held onto far too long. It’s powerfully freeing to know and accept the truth about my own and others’ failings!

All of us, whether or not we have chosen the journey of parenthood, have experienced our share of both wins and losses. It’s my wish for each of us that we might embrace our shortcomings on this mom’s day, and have a good laugh about ourselves and the silly thought that we could be anything but imperfect!!

Someone once said, “Perfect parents exist – but they don’t have kids yet!”

I invite you to affirm with me that we will continue on the path toward finding our truest selves, even though acknowledging our flaws – as well as our inherent worthiness – will necessarily be part of that journey.

And remember, we are together on this perfectly imperfect journey!
