Here I Am (with my Big Brother) Waving Goodbye
Dr. Seuss and Winnie-the-Pooh share the same philosophy on goodbyes, it seems:
“Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” – Dr. Seuss.
I believe it’s only those who have suffered unthinkable losses, and have learned to smile because it happened, who can honestly utter these words. Like Rita Berglund, my guest on this week’s podcast.
But I can practice getting ready for the big losses by learning to smile about the smaller goodbyes – a friend once called this “getting in front of my goodbyes.”
Marlena—you look so innocently authentic as a child on that big horse. Many of us learn to hide our openness as a strategy for protecting ourselves as we age. By contrast, in your podcast Rita Berglund gives us the gift of her authentic self while sharing her story and life lessons learned as she was forced to say goodbye in the midst of unthinkable pain.
